tcpdump-richard-1.7 24 Feb 1996
---------------------------------------------------

This version of tcpdump is based on tcpdump-3.0.2 and has all known
patches applied (the ones you can find separately at several ftp sites
under the names tcpdump.patch[123], and those in tcpdump-3.0.3 for
Linux). In other words: to the best of my knowledge it is at least as up
to date as those versions with some additions and bugfixes of my own.

My contribution to this release mainly consists of the addition of the
capability to exchange files with the utility 'snoop' as found on
Solaris platforms. tcpdump will read them automagically and write them
by specifying a file with option -W instead of plain -w. This has been
documented in the manual page.

On Linux, tcpdump will now allow you to filter on PPP interfaces too.
Before, filtered packets from a PPP interface were discarded. This fix
is a hack BTW, what really should be fixed is the PPP stack in Linux
IMHO.

I tested this release on Linux and SunOS. If I made a mistake, this may
not compile anymore on the other supported platforms. Please mail me if
you find this to be true so I can fix it.

Why yet another distribution? I sent patches for my changes to the
original makers from LBL and Adam Caldwell, but neither have
incorporated them in the existing distributions. Adam's viewpoint is
that these patches should be in the distribution from LBL (rightly so,
they are not Linux specific) but LBL have not brought out a new release
yet.
