We will digitize one of the variables in the image Hydrograph.gif, which was
placed in the Digitize2 directory when Digitize2 was installed.

Start Digitize2.exe

Using the menu File - Open Image select Hydrograph.gif. This will load the
image and open the Transform Setup panel. You can always open this panel using
the menu Settings - Transform.

Change the size of the main window so you can see all of the image.
The main window is the one that displays the image and offers menu choices.

Move the Transform Setup panel (Titled "Digitize Axes Setup") to a convenient
place on your screen.

Note in the Transform Setup panel one of the lines of text is in red. Digitize2
is indicating you need to move your mouse into the main window and click on the
lower left corner of the graph. This is the data point 2400 and 0 Accumulated
rainfall in inches. If you think you can not see the point well enough hit
"Cntl i" to zoom the image. You can move around the zoomed image using the
numeric keypad with the Cntl key. See the documentation for details.

When the cursor is in the main window it will display as a pencil. When you
click on a point in the image the pixel coordinate will be read and loaded into
the Transform Setup panel's first blank entry field. The value reported will be
close to (43,128). The next entry field will become yellow, indicating it can
receive user input, and the text above the entry field is turned red. Note the
previous entry field remains white. White entry fields are used to indicate the
user can not or should not manually edit the values in the field. Yellow means
manual entry is required.

Enter the string "0 0" (without the quotes) and hit the OK checkbox to the right
of the entry field. Note you can do this either using the mouse or by hitting
the tab key and then the space bar. Standard GUI interface procedures are
supported by Digitize2.

The text above the next entry field is now red. Again using the mouse select
the lower right corner of the graph. The value reported will be close to
(525,126).

The next entry field will now accept input. Enter the string "48 0", again
without the quotes.

Select the OK checkbox to the right of the entry field.

Click on the upper left corner of the graph. The value will be close to
(44,459).

In the next entry field enter the string "0 10", again without the quotes.

You can go back and edit the values in the above fields if you wish. Just be
careful you know what you are doing and don't make mistrakes. Your Transform
Setup panel will now look like TutorialTransformSetup.gif.

Select the OK checkbox to the right of the entry field.

The transform is computed and the Transform Setup Panel closed.

Now check that everything was done properly by clicking on the upper right
corner of the graph. The Coordinates window will show that you have picked a
point in the image at or close to (522,460) and the data coordinates for that
point are (48,10).

As that is not enough precision change the value in the Data Format list box to
read "3 3", again without the quotes.

Again pick the upper left corner of the graph. The coordinates window will show
that you have picked a point at or close to (523,460) and the data coordinates
for that point are (47.000,10.090)

We will now start digitizing the black line.

Now we will create a file to hold our digitized points. In the Coordinates
panel do a right mouse click on the top most entry field. Alternatively, on the
main panel using the menu select File - Save Points. Either will open a file
dialog. Enter the name "Rainfall.pts" and close the dialog.

On the mail panel select the menu item View - Point List Window. This will open
another panel, the "Points in Current Line" panel.

Select the Save checkbox in the lower right portion of the Coordinates panel.
This will enable the "New Line" and "Write Comment" pushbuttons.

In the entry field at the bottom of the Coordinates panel, the Comments entry
field, enter the string "Rainfall from USGS report." and hit the "Write Comment"
button. The comment will be shown in the "Points in Current Line" panel and
will have been written into the file Rainfall.pts.

Now select the menu Settings - Paint Settings. Set the color to a full red by
clicking on the far right of the color wheel and sliding the slider to the far
right.

On the Tools panel select the Line tool. Now when you move the cursor into the
main panel the pointer will be a line icon.

Position the pointer on the far right limit of the heavy blue line. Click and
release the left mouse button. The first point, coordinates (4.581,-0.024) is
digitized.

Without changing the position of the cursor again click the left mouse but do
not release the button. This defines the start of a line that will be
drawn on the image. Still holding the left mouse button down move the
pointer to another point on the blue line and release the mouse button.
This defines the end of the line to be drawn on the image. Where the button is
released will be digitized. Repeat this process as desired.

When the line has been digitized click on the New Line push button on the
Coordinates panel. This will write a blank line into the Rainfall.pts file and
clear the "Points in Current Line" panel.

Now select the Pen tool on the Tool Panel.

Edit the Comments entry field as desired and select the Write Comment push
button.

Now move the cursor into the main panel onto the far left edge of the blue
line. Click and release the left mouse button. This will digitize a point.

Select another location along the blue line, click and release the left mouse
button. Repeat this process until satisfied with the number of points.

Notes:
The format used to display points can be changed at any time. It only affects
points that are subsequently digitized.

Digitize2 will not edit or overright a file of digitized points. It will only
create a new one or append to an existing file.

If a transformation is available and either the Pen or Line tool is active, a
point is digitized whenever the left mouse button is released within the main
window. It will be recorded if the Save checkbox is checked.

You can examine the points digitized by viewing the points file with an editor.
When a point is digitized Digitize2 simply attempts to append another line to
the file and will do so if it has write permission.
